MA Book Guidance

At Leigh Primary we utlise Schofield and Simms Mental Arithmatic (MA) Books for set mathematics homework.  MA books have been introduced to help children practice and develop their mental arithmetic skills.  Since their introduction we have been encouraged by the positive feedback from you all, and the impact on the children’s learning as a result of this homework.

MA books are sent home each Wednesday and we ask that they are returned by the following Monday.  When homework is handed in they will be marked. Once work is returned on Wednesday it is essential that children finish their corrections BEFORE moving on to the next page and we would ask that you also check this at home.  Children will need to complete these pages in pencil only and will need to do 1 session/test per week (please do not exceed this amount).

These books will be marked by the school and used to track children’s progress and collect points for a Maths Cup (Armstrong Maths Cup), which will be presented to the winning class on Friday mornings.  For the foreseeable future the cup will be awarded to the class who has the most MA books handed in on time. In the case of a draw scoring will be used to ascertain a winner. As far as possible we would like these pages to be completed unaided.  However, if support is required to solve a problem please place a dot next to the question so that teachers are aware of this (support does not include reading the question, as younger children will need this adult guidance).

We would appreciate if your child’s MA book could be covered in some way to preserve it.  E.g. Plastic zip wallet, book cover or sticky back plastic.

In September your child may be reissued with the same book they were using at the end of last term. As the term progresses your class teacher will monitor and review your child’s book and make alterations where appropriate.  If you have any queries regarding the book your child has been given please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher.

MA BOOK CLUB!

Finally,  MA book club will continue on Tuesday lunchtimes in the Hawk classroom.  Children joining this club will be permitted to have their lunch immediately at 12:00 so they can attend. This club is for upper KS1 (Year 2) and KS2 children.  The children will be expected to work largely independently but will be given support by myself should they need it. Some children may with to attend if they have had lots of corrections in order to discuss/resolve any difficulties or misconceptions. Sometimes corrections are hard to make if the question was not understood; at these times an adult is required. It is expected that children who attend this club will have returned their MA book on the Monday as the schedule outlines and requested their MA book back on Tuesday to bring with them to the club.  After the club children will return their MA book to their class teacher.  The MA book will then be handed out on a Wednesday so you have the opportunity to review your child’s work should you wish and give them a chance to finish it for the following Monday.

I look forward to seeing children from across the school on Tuesdays.
